Semillas Latitud Plant

14/06/2011 - “Semillas Latitud” is a joint initiative between El Tejar and the Solaris group, aimed at the high-tech production, processing and treatment of seeds.

The Semillas Latitud plant was inaugurated in the city of Young, Uruguay, on Friday June 3, 2011 within the framework of the "Agroindustrial Polo and its Synergy" presentation.

Semillas Latitud originated as a result of a joint venture between the companies Solaris and El Tejar, who envisaged the opportunity to add value to production as well as to generate more employment in Uruguay. More than 25 people will be employed in the plant as permanent employees and other 25 on a seasonal basis.

Semillas Latitud will allow producers to simplify the production processes and will ensure permanent seed availability and quality by using the latest technology in the seed production, processing and treatment.

The plant is equipped with cutting-edge technology allowing homogeneous, highly-viable, already inoculated and cured seeds, making farming logistics simpler and ensuring successful crops.

Rigorous quality controls are conducted in the plant through all the process stages achieving thus premium seeds. Different elements are needed to accomplish these standards: a team of professionals with broad experience in seed production; state-of-the-art equipment; suitable farms for production; and logistics for a proper management, storage and conservation.

Semillas Latitud incorporates other companies to its production chain, such as BASF, affording their fungicide (seed treatment); Nitragin, with their inoculants; as well as the premium genetics provided by such companies as Nidera, Sursem and La Tijereta.

Plant process stages

1. It begins with the proper farm selection: the planted area is larger than the area to be harvested, allowing a good selection of lots according to the biological quality of the farms.

2. A technical tracking is conducted during cropping, applying seed specific site management criteria. A farm analysis is made before harvest, which is then repeated at the plant reception.

3. Should it be a proper seed lot, it is unloaded, pre-washed, dried, cleaned, and classified by size, shape and specific weight. Once the seeds have been classified they are stored in a proper storage area where seeds conditions are kept under control.

4. Before the lot is delivered, the seeds go through an industrial treatment. They are finally packed either in 40-kg bags or Big Bags of 500 or 1,000 kg, depending on the clients’ needs.

This is how the premium quality seeds are ready to be planted.

Taking advantage of the volume and geographical diversification, El Tejar Uruguay will be the exclusive seed grain supplier of the company.

Solaris will be the exclusive supplier of all inputs and seed processing products, as well as of the technology used for the plant operation.

Semillas Latitud is located 3 km away from the city of Young, more specifically, on the Km 307 of the National Route Nº3 General Artigas, in the Río Negro Department, Uruguay.
