03/11/2009 - More than 1,800 people attended the II “Open Gates” Workshop in Uruguay. Every Year, more and more people take part in this event, which especially attracts the attention of future generations.
The II Open Gates Workshop with the “Leading Progress” slogan held last October 30 in “Las Acacias” farm, Tomás de Cuadra site, in Durazno, received an outstanding audience.
The activity, organized by the Rural Association of Durazno, Working League Del Carmen, Municipality of Durazno, and El Tejar, was aligned with the “International Entrepreneur Week.”
The initiative was supported by 70 companies; 6 universities and post-secondary institutions; the National Institution of Agricultural Investigation; the Institute of Biological Investigations Clemente Estable; the Livestock and Agriculture Ministry; 6 union and rural associations; 16 social organizations; and more than 20 mass media representatives.
Organizers agree in that one of the highest points of the day was the participation of a great number of youngsters from the whole country, especially many pupils from agricultural schools. More than 1,800 people gathered at the event, exceeding at great length the 1,200 attendees of the first occasion.
The funds collection in aid of the 6 rural schools that served the lunch (Schools No 30, 52, 55, 56, 58 and 80), doubled the last-year figure, amounting to $ 141,076! During the event, an informative video was played showing the destinations of the funds collected in the 2008 workshop, as well as testimonies of the beneficiaries of the education projects supported. The mayor of Río Negro, Dr. Omar Lafluf, applauded the investment of more than USD 36,000 in the Rio Negro community.
The opening was in charge of Ismael Turbán, Leader of El Tejar Uruguay; Eng. Benjamín Irazábal, Mayor of Durazno; Oscar Etcheverry, President of the Working League Del Carmen; and Agr. Eng. Daniel Puig, President of the Rural Association of Durazno.
Panellists focused on the “Leadership” topic, arriving to important conclusions, which were transmitted to the audience.

During the afternoon, 12 buses visited the 4 agriculture and livestock farm stations, while on the main tent the farm activities were being transmitted. In this occasion, experts from INIA, the Agronomy School, and El Tejar showed the latest technology applied in such fields as: environment handling, precision farming, colza, supplementation, inter-cropping, seedbeds and natural farm improvement. The technical responsibles of each station were: Station 1: “Seedbeds: agriculture-livestock integration” by Nicolás Lorenzo, Martín Zerbino, Pablo Domínguez of El Tejar, and Rodrigo Zarza of INIA. Station 2: “Inter-cropping: wheat/soybean” by Javier Moreira and Guzmán Irazábal of El Tejar, Adriana García of INIA and Sebastián Mazzilli and Oswaldo Ernst of the School of Agronomy.
Station 3: “Rape in Rotation” and “Precision farming” by Andrés Herrera, Laura Olivera of El Tejar, and Marina Castro and Alvaro Roel of INIA.
Station 4: “Livestock: supplementation on improved natural farm” by Matías Topolansky, Bernardo Andregnette of El Tejar, and Pablo Rovira and Francisco Formoso of INIA.
Furthermore, t-shirts signed by ex-soccerplayer Enzo Francescoli are being sold to the highest bidder during one week. Offers shall be sent to porterasabiertas@eltejar.com, with a base price of u$s 200. The amount collected from the sale will be allocated to education projects.
