Conference of the Argentine Network of Food Banks

30/06/2009 - Within a context where hunger outlines as an issue of great concern, the Argentine Network of Food Banks gathered specialists and companies in order to analyze the nutritional situation of our country.

The Argentine Network of Food Banks together with the Buenos Aires Food Bank organized its 5th Conference “Building networks for a better fed country”, with the participation of different public and private organizations concerned about the world’s hunger and hunger-related problems.

Alfredo Kasdorf, president of the Argentine Network of Food Banks, closed the conference with a generalized call for commitment to the nutrition problem. Besides, he promoted networking for a better fed country.

The conference was about four core themes. The first one was the social and nutritional situation of our country. Secondly, Civil Society Organizations and companies spoke about their actions in order to face the before mentioned situation and emphasized the importance of networking. Lastly, there was a debate about the place occupied by the hunger issue in the public agenda.

During the event, a survey conducted by the Argentine Network of Food Banks among the 1,000 organizations working with the Food Banks was submitted; resulting in 63% of organizations having suffered a drop of resources over the last 6 months and 81% having increased the demand of families and people during the same period. On the other hand, 88% of the organizations asserted that they were able to reduce costs by taking food from the food banks.

About the ARGENTINE NETWORK OF FOOD BANKS.
The Argentine Network of Food Banks guarantees transparency in the food distribution as well as making it possible the exchange of foods among the associated Banks, ensuring thus the nutritional quality of the distributed food. During 2006, the Network delivered 4,500 tons of food among 1,000 organizations gathering 150,000 people, mostly children. Moreover, the Network implemented 17 training programs and made alliances that allowed the creation of social capital in the communities where the Food Banks operate.
